The Amazing Rainforest Science & Arts Children's Centre is an interactive centre designed to provide extensions in science and arts for learning. The centre has provided science and Arts programs to various boards for many years. Programs are designed to make direct links with the Ontario curriculum. They are led by Ontario Certified Teachers.

SCIENCE PROGRAMS

Rainforest Program (PreK-Grade 4)

Take an imaginary journey through the Rainforest. Listen to the reading of a tale of the Great Kapok Tree by Lynn Cherry. Students will have a hands-on experience on the various animals and plants that live in the Rainforest. Children will feed various reptiles and learn about their need to survive and their adaptations. Children can paint their own Rainforest T-shirt for an additional $5.00

Duration: Half Day

Animal & Plant Adaptations (Grade 2)

Students will have a hands-on experience on the various animals and plants that live in the Rainforest. Children will feed various reptiles and learn about their need to survive and their adaptations. Children will leave with a good understanding on how various plants and animals, including us humans, have various structural and behavioural adaptations that have permitted our continuous survival.

Bridge Building (Science & Arts) (Grades 3-7)

Children will study structures and the needed elements of building a bridge (i.e. load, force). They will build a bridge using recycled materials and then test their bridge using weights/people. We have built miniature bridges to hold a 200 lb load.

Les Animaux en Danger (Grades 3-5)

Children will learn a basic set of vocabulary identifying endangered animal names, what they eat and their habitat. They will participate in hands-on guided activities (i.e. mask making, booklet) that will enable them to use the vocabulary learned in context. Children will also benefit from a guided tour and free-time in the maze & exhibit science hall.

VISUAL ARTS PROGRAMS

Our visual arts program includes the traditional fine arts of drawing, painting and sculpting. Our program is intended to further develop children's creativity. Children will use a variety of tools/mediums according to the activity/project selected. Art activities can be modified to cross link with a specific theme or teaching subject. Most projects can be accompanied by a rubric or assessment tool as requested by teacher.

Clay Pinch Pots (PreK-Grade 2)

Using basic hand-building techniques for clay, students will create pot, vase or tea cup with saucer. We will explore pot making from a variety of cultures. We will use vocabulary specific to working with clay.

Clay Head Portraits (Grades 1-8)

Using a photograph, children will create a 3-dimensional head portrait or make a portrait of a school teacher and display it. They will learn a variety of hand-building techniques for clay.

Clay Masks (Grades 1-8)

Using a variety of hand-building techniques, students will create a 3-dimensional mask! Explore the history and use of the mask from a diversity of cultures. Students will explore form, pattern, and texture. We will discuss the physical properties and many uses of clay. We will learn and use terminology and vocabulary specific to working with clay.

3D Paper Mask Making (Grades 3-6)

We will take a look at masks around the world. Children will create a life-size 3D paper mask using a variety of cutting/"texturizing", paper sculpture techniques.
